On Wednesday, August 12, a small Piper airplane known for towing banners for advertising (usually Geico or the Sanibel Outlets), developed engine trouble and had to make an emergency landing on the Sanibel Island beach near Beach Access #6 (close to the Blue Dolphin Cottages). After detaching the banner for safety (the ad now lost at sea), the pilot managed to set down in a remote stretch of the beach, managing to avoid a small amount of beachgoers and even missing all the turtle nests. There were no injuries. What’s even more amazing is that the pilot was able to make repairs and take off again, returning to its base in Hollywood, Florida (a Hollywood ending?).
