This year marks the 11th season for the Sanibel Farmers Market. The market takes place each Sunday from 8am to 1pm at the Sanibel City Hall (located at 800 Dunlop Road) from October through May. It is organized by Local Roots, co-owned by island residents Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura. The weekly market features a mix of venders, products and crafts. These include: local produce, meats, cheeses, coffees, nuts, pastries, pickles, flowers and let’s not forget the “guacamole guy” (Dynasty Guacamole!).
The craft vendors are new this year, due in part by the number of visitors to the islands. “Everyone can’t always take food or a plant home with them on a plane,” Baer said. She explained that this addition gives shoppers the opportunity to pick up an island memento or keepsake.
There is another addition this season. There will be prepared meals to go. Just in case you don’t want to cook while on your vacation. The Paper Fig, will have its freshly made selections available, with options such as lasagna and eggplant parmesan. Ma Petite Creperie will feature will feature authentic, traditional French crepes and Three Little Birds will serve breakfast items later in the season.
Other elements that have changed this season are tied to two separate issues: the city ordinance banning plastic straws and no dogs allowed (except for service animals). The new pet rule is “Due to enhancing the safety of the market” Ventura said.
Local Roots is partnering with F.I.S.H of Sanibel-Captiva to collect unsold boxes of vegetables, fruits and other offerings from the vendors to donate to the food pantry. The market also serves as a drop-off site for donations (just remember unopened and nonperishable).
Free parking is available at City Hall, Sanibel public Library and BIG ARTS Strauss Theater. We do recommend riding a bike or walking. There are plenty of bike racks on site.
In addition to Sanibel, Captiva Island Farmers Market will return for a second season, January 1 through April 30th on Tuesdays from 9am to 1pm at the South Seas Resort. Local Roots will also be organizing a Captiva Art show for December.
